CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QC Life) - Do your kids struggle with grasping science, technology, engineering, or math concepts?

We invited Jacki Lane, with Project Scientist, to the studio to show us a simple way of teaching our youngest STEAM lessons using bubbles.

Lane prepared two bubble experiments for us, the ‘Bouncing Bubble’ and the ‘Bubble Snake.’

For the first one, she mixed water with dish soap and glycerin since the latter will keep the water from evaporating. As a result, bubbles are formed.

The oil and dirt on our hands usually causes bubbles to pop when we try to hold them. However, Laned showed us that by wearing gloves, we are in fact able to bounce them.

For the second one, you need a bubble solution, socks, a water bottle, and food coloring.

To get the best results, Lane recommends cutting the bottom off the bottle and attaching a sock to the open end. Then you can dip the sock into the bubble solution and start to blow and create your Bubble Snake.

Project Scientist is a non-profit organization providing educational STEAM afterschool and summer programs to 4 to 18-year-old girls from underserved and marginalized communities.

According to Lane, only about 27% of STEM jobs are currently held by women, with an even lower percentage of Latina, Black, and Indigenous women.

To help raise awareness of and reduce that disparity, their programs are available in English and Spanish free of charge, thanks to the support of local companies and foundations such as Trane Technologies, Albemarle, and Ally.

“Our programming introduces STEM to our girls, introduces them to diverse STEM careers, and opens them up to the possibilities,” Lane said.
