Meet The Artist Behind The Doughnut Mural In South End

The hot sign was on bright and early this morning for the opening of the new Krispy Kreme in South End. WBTV was out there as hungry customers lined up outside. We first told you about it last week on QC Morning and then on Friday we had our first look inside on QC@3.

It opened at 6:00 this morning. It’s got that vending machine outside and menu items in the store like milkshakes and ice cream sandwiches. YUM!

But there’s another really cool aspect to the new Krispy Kreme that you won’t find at any other location. A doughnut mural! It was created by artist Gina Franco. She joined us on QC Morning to talk about how she was picked to paint this masterpiece. Gina tells us several months ago she was contacted by Krispy Kreme to participate in a contest. Someone from the company had scrolled through her artwork on Instagram and really enjoyed what they saw. She had a week to come up with a design. Gina tells us she won the contest, but the design she originally created wasn’t the donut mural, that was decided later. She tells us it was a long process, but she’s happy with the final results.
