"With everything going on, we wanted to take a stand and fight along side everyone else for some change"
Right now, hundreds of breweries across the world are taking part in the Black is Beautiful Initiative. It’s a mission to bring awareness to the injustices that many people of color face daily, through beer.
To take part, brewers are asked to do three things:
- Donate 100% of the beer’s proceeds to local foundations that support police brutality reform and legal defenses for those who have been wronged.
- Choose their own entity to donate to local organizations that support equality and inclusion
- Commit to the long-term work of equality
Weathered Souls provided a recipe to the beer, but brewers are encouraged to put their own twists on it. Divine Barrel Brewing in Charlotte’s NoDa neighborhood just started making theirs. They are donating all of their proceeds from the beer to Ignite N-C. QC@3’s Jordan Sawyers takes us inside to see the process.
So far, 742 breweries are taking part in the initiative. There is at least one in all 50 states, and there are 13 participating countries in total. Almost 30 breweries in our area are participating in making Black is Beautiful.
