Rolling out in over 50 countries today, Instagram is introducing Reels; the platform’s latest venture into content creation.
Reels are short, 15-second long videos that anyone can create and are featured in a new space under the Explore tab and can be posted to Feeds. The announcement comes after some uncertainty over the past couple of weeks surrounding the future of TikTok in the United States.
In an announcement Wednesday, the Facebook-owned social media platform said, “Reels gives people new ways to express themselves, discover more of what they love on Instagram, and help anyone with the ambition of becoming a creator take center stage.”
Videos are easy to create and share with privacy controls being a priority. Public accounts can create content and share with a wide audience in Discover, while private accounts can make and share with just their followers. Reels can also be shared with Stories and set to disappear after 24 hours.
There are a variety of ways to edit when making videos, including filters, AR-effects, sounds, and speed.
In 2018, Instagram launched IGTV; a way to upload and watch long-form videos from users.
