The Bomber at the Bottom of Badin Lake

After nearly 76 years, there are still questions about what caused a WWII bomber to go down in Badin Lake.

June 8, 1944…a WWII bomber went down in Badin Lake in Stanly County. The pilot, Marine Corps 2nd Lt. Charles McDaniel, was flying over the lake on his way to Cherry Point so that his wife could watch. On the third pass, something went wrong.

Today the Afteplane still sits somewhere at the bottom of the lake…along with the bodies of McDaniel and his co-pilot, Navy Ensign John Withrow.
