If you have ever received a gift, saved it and then given it to someone else, you are not alone. In fact, today is National Regifting Day! However, if you are going to “regift,” etiquette experts say there are four rules in particular to keep in mind.

The QC Morning team spoke with the CEO of Finesse Worldwide, Aimee Symington, who broke down the rules which include making sure the gift fits the recipient and not lying about where it came from. Symington added regifting is more socially acceptable now, however, she says you do not want to make “regifting” more awkward by breaking the rules.

She also gave us a list of gifts that are perfectly okay to regift!

  • New household items, such as small appliances, dish towels, or blankets
  • Bath products, such as soaps, lotions, or bubble baths
  • Unopened bottles of wine and other spirits
  • Candles
  • Gift cards (check to make sure the balance hasn’t expired and the card isn’t personalized to you)
  • Unopened gift baskets
  • Books in excellent condition
  • New-with-tags clothing (make sure the item is either relatively nondescript—like a scarf and gloves—or the perfect gift for the recipient)
  • Unopened perfume and fragrances
  • Inexpensive jewelry
  • Board games, toys, and puzzles
  • Novelty or gag gifts
