WBTV Studio — CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QC Life) - Access to healthcare should not be tied to ZIP Codes, said Emily Muller of Hospitality House of Charlotte.

Throughout February, the Hospitality House of Charlotte is organizing its second Heart-to-Heart fundraiser to support patients in need of vital medical care.

Executive Director Angie Bush and Sr. Development Manager Emily Muller with the Hospitality House of Charlotte joined the show to talk about their mission to facilitate access to healthcare for people who require specific types of treatment and provide them with a strong support network.

First opened in 1985, the Hospitality House of Charlotte offers lodging to patients and their caregivers, receiving medical treatment at Charlotte facilities. Last year, the organization was able to provide guests with housing for over 2,400 nights and save them $2.3 million in lodging costs.

The accommodation includes 20 bedrooms with private bathrooms, access to a fully stocked kitchen and pantry, laundry facilities and supplies, complimentary parking, and a shuttle service to and from hospital systems for just $50 per room and night.

To help people tackle the financial burden, the HHOC is organizing the second annual Heart-to-Heart fundraiser in February. Bush and Muller encouraged community members to donate $50 to cover the cost of one night at the HHOC and promised to plant a heart in their lawn for every donation received.

According to Bush and Muller, the goal is to raise $35,000, which equals 700 room nights. They will also be hosting two additional in-person events.

Attendees can look forward to a Pint Night at Wooden Robot at the Chamber in NoDa on Tuesday, Feb. 5, from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. One $1 per beer will support the HHOC’s mission.

In addition, the Heart-to-Heart Community Day will be held throughout the week of Feb. 19-22 in collaboration with Atrium Health’s Sanger Heart and Vascular Institute and the American Heart Association. The exact date is yet to be announced, but interested parties can expect hand-only CPR training, blood pressure screenings, heart-healthy snacks, and a chili dinner.
