QC Life’s Jorge Andres joined Amy Aussieker, executive director, and Daniel Heaton, deputy director, of the Innovation Barn to talk about their various initiatives.
He also met with Sam Fleming, executive director of 100 Gardens, to learn more about aquaponic systems.
According to Aussieker, the Innovation Barn is currently involved in 15 to 20 initiatives. One of them includes recycling plastic waste such as beer can holders to create filament for 3D printers, bricks for tiny homes or sheds, benches and more.
Another initiative includes collecting old t-shirts and weaving and turning them into things like dog beds. Aussieker said they were able to donate 30 of them to Animal Care and Control and other organizations.

“The goal is to be zero waste. So, that is reusing, recycling, and designing with the end in mind to keep everything out of the landfill,” Aussieker said.
