CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QC Life) - You’ve probably experienced it yourself, that icky feeling in your stomach when you’re scrolling through social media and you see your friends party at a fancy new club or shop at an expensive boutique.

It’s called “Fear Of Missing Out,” or ‘FOMO, and it’s usually sparked by excessive use of social media which is why younger generations are particularly at risk.

Jaren Doby, a therapist and public speaker, joined the show to help us better understand why we experience these feelings of jealousy and anxiety and how we can help our children deal with them in a healthy manner.

Doby said it is essential that we try to get to the bottom of why they are experiencing FOMO by asking our kids if they really want to participate in a certain activity or if they are simply afraid of missing out because their friends are involved in it.

According to Doby, it is important that parents reassure their children that there will be other opportunities and encourage them to spend more time offline and away from their electronic devices.

He also stressed that being mindful, compassionate and putting yourself in your children’s shoes can go a long way.

“We have to aim to understand our children and understand ourselves and what it is that does help with being able to reduce anxiety,” Doby said.
