IRON STATION, N.C. (QC Life) - A nod to the past and a simpler life, the Kayser family opened a butcher shop to serve local communities.
QC Life’s Brian Stephenson joined Shad and Jennifer Kayser and their kids at the farm to learn more about how they went from raising chickens to running a whole farm and a butcher shop.
“We found out that chickens tend to be the gateway drug to farming because after we got the chickens, the kids decided they wanted other animals,” Jennifer Kayser said.
The Kaysers are a big family, with nine kids, some of which were adopted from Ukraine or in need of permanent guardianship.
All of their kids were homeschooled and started helping out in the family business early on, teaching them how to take responsibility for the animals placed in their care.

“It’s not like you forget to take out the garbage and you can do it later,” Kayser said. “There are greater consequences when the chores on the farm don’t get done or don’t get done properly.”
According to Shad Kayser, they strive to provide local customers with high-quality meat products as well as fresh bread, milk and an array of tea varieties.
“We’re a whole animal butchery; we want to use every part of the animal that we can and have as little waste as possible,” he said.
Located in Iron Station, D6 Provisions operates Wednesday through Friday from 12 to 7 p.m., on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and on Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m.
