CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QC Life) - Are you over 16 and still looking for a fun and flexible summer job? If so, read on.
To battle the nationwide lifeguard shortage, YMCA has created a special lifeguard training program geared towards students, stay-at-home moms, and other community members who would like to join their mission.
QC Life’s Jorge Andres joined Ame Guy with YMCA at their Aquatic Center to learn more about the program.
According to Guy, they are looking to hire around 300 lifeguards between now and the end of summer who will be certified free of charge. The program will focus on water rescue, safety, First Aid skills and include in-classroom portions as well as lessons in the pool.
“Drowning is the leading cause of death for children aged 1-14. So, knowing that we have measures in place to prevent that, is very important,” Guy said.

She also brought our attention to the various summer camps, they are offering for kids and teens such as the ‘Junior Lifeguard Camp’, waterboard, sailing, waterskiing camps and more.
However, YMCA is not just a place of work but a place where people can connect with the community and where different generations can learn from each other.
Two lifeguards, Tim Bahr, 62 and Thomas Odell, 22 shared their experiences with the organization and what they like about their job with our Jorge Andres.
“It’s not super difficult, and it’s a good opportunity to meet people and enjoy community,” Odell said.
“It’s a really great first job it you’re a young person in high school or college and it’s a very good last job,” Bahr said.
