STATESVILLE, N.C. (WBTV) - An Iredell County boy is making hairlines – er, headlines – with his unique haircut, one he hopes will win a distinctly American competition.
Luke Verzani from Statesville is nine years old and is one of dozens of kids across the country battling to be the “Mullet Champ.”
The national competition showcases heads of hair across all age groups, starting as young as toddlers. Luke’s mom said he first wanted a mullet when he was in kindergarten when he saw someone sporting one at a restaurant.
“He kind of lives the mullet lifestyle...he’s mischievous, he’s always looking to have fun, he’s quick-witted and he kind of goes with the flow,” she said. “The mullet definitely fits his personality, for sure.”
This year is the second time he is competing, rocking his “Grand Spike” mullet hairdo, which features some gelled-up spikes on top and of course a long, flowing tail.

Competitors are judged in three areas: a fan vote, a judge’s vote and fundraising. Money raised will go toward Jared Allen’s Homes for Wounded Warriors.
People can vote for Luke and other mullet-bearers here. Thirty-four kids from the 8-12-year-old age bracket will advance to the second round. From there competitors will advance to the final round before a champion is crowned on Aug. 28.
