CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QC Life) - Animal shelters in our area have been full to capacity for weeks. Now, the CMPD Animal Care and Control is waiving the adoption fee, making it easier for potential owners to give these animals a new home.

Animal Care and Control spokesperson Melissa Knicely joined us this afternoon to share what has been going on at the shelter this past week and what they are doing now.

The shelter has been extremely full this past week, which Knicely explains is common for all U.S. animal shelters this time of year. The total animals in the shelter right now are 324, with an additional 613 animals in foster, making a grand total of 937 animals in ACC care right now.

Because of this huge number, the ACC is running two adoption campaigns where adoption fees are waived. Bissel Pet Foundation Empty the Shelter is running until July 31. PetSmart is also hosting its PetSmart Charities National Adoption Week, which waives adoption fees when a financial donation is made to support shelter programs.

Watch the segment above to hear our full conversation and meet Dip, a three-year-old dog that is still a puppy at heart. Visit the ACC website or find them on Instagram and Facebook to learn on how you can help empty the shelter today.
