Tom Abernathy, 87, has hiked Bakers Mountain Park in Catawba County for decades. For six days a week, he hikes these familiar trails to see what he will discover.
He was raised as a sharecropper in Catawba Country and has worked in the furniture business for years. But his greatest love is the wooded trails of Bakers Mountain Park.
Last month, Catawba County Parks honored him as an “Original Bakers Mountain Ambassador” for his dedication to the park and his efforts to tell people about it.
