CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QC Life) - Avoid bone weakness in your child with these tips from the Fracture Prevention Program.
JoAnn Holzinger, FNP and Clinical Coordinator for the Fracture Prevention Program at Atrium MSKI, explained why bone health is important for a child’s development and a few ways to keep bones healthy.
She recommends beginning bone health strategies while your kid is young to maximize bone mass. Reaching peak bone mass can prevent osteoporosis from developing by 13 years and gives kids a better chance at preventing bone weakness later in life.
Parents should focus on these key things for healthy bones:
- Give kids high-calcium foods
- Make sure kids get enough vitamin D
- Encourage kids to exercise at least an hour a day
- Motivate kids to eat more protein
