CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QC Life) - The Dallas Sting was the first United States women’s team to play in a FIFA tournament.
Former players Jennifer Lawson, Erin Adamson and Melinda Derden shared more about their experience on the 1984 team.
The tournament the 1984 Sting played in was the predecessor to the World Cup. After beating Italy, they became the first U.S. women’s team to win a major international and FIFA title.
The players talked about why they believe their team was chosen to compete in the tournament, plus their previous accomplishments. They also discussed challenges they faced while playing in China, and what it was like to play as the U.S. National Team before there was a U.S. National Team.
The team is being honored Saturday during halftime of the inaugural Carolina Ascent match. The match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start time at American Legion Memorial Stadium.
