CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - It’s the unofficial end of summer, so savor it while you can with these events happening in and around Charlotte.
National Pastry Conference (The Park Expo & Conference Center), through Saturday: Calling all pastry chefs and enthusiasts. It’s time to indulge in one of the sweetest conferences around. Eat sweet treats, meet top pastry chefs and build your own culinary community. Watch as chefs go head-to-head in baking competitions and get a taste of what it’s like to work in a real kitchen. Daily passes are $95each.
Matthews Alive (Downtown Matthews, NC), Friday to Monday: Every year, the Matthews community gets together for one of its largest festivals 50 years strong. Over100,000 people fill the streets for a weekend of good music, food, music and fun. Bring the family for carnival rides, food trucks, vendors and a parade. Admission is free.
Fork Fest (McAdenville & Cramerton), Saturday & Sunday: What better way to celebrate Labor Day than a floating concert. Fork Fest is a two-day music festival filled with outdoor activities. Enjoy the beauty of South Fork’s banks with a vendor market, art demonstrations, food and beverage stations and more. Then hop on your kayak for a one-of-a-kind floating concert featuring Crystal Fountains. Admission is free with tickets available for special events.
Labor Day Celebration (Whitewater Center), Saturday & Sunday: If you’re looking for a more adventurous way to celebrate Labor Day, head to the Whitewater Center for a jam-packed weekend of activities. From trail races to yoga for all levels, as well as all the regular fun that the center provides like rafting, climbing and the wildwoods. Enjoy live music all weekend from Jason Scott & The High Heat and the Larry Keel experience. Admission is free with activity passes available for purchase.

Queen City Arts Festival (Shoppes at University Place), Saturday 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.: Back for its third year, the Queen City Arts Festival celebrates the rich heritage of the African diaspora with the spirit of the Carolinas. You’ll find local art, culture, dance, spoken word and music. See artists like Ali Steele, MJ Footworkz, Dionne D. Hunter and more. Admission is free.
Summer BLAST! Fireworks Show (Carowinds), Saturday 9:30 p.m.: It’s a Labor Day weekend tradition for all of the Carolinas. End your summer with a bang as the fireworks light up the Carolina skyline with viewing spots all over the park. The show is included with valid park admission.
Around the Crown 10K (Truist Field), Sunday 7:30 a.m.: It’s a Charlotte Labor Day tradition running around Uptown with your neighbors. Start at Truist Field and run up I-277where you’ll get a picturesque view of the Queen City. Then, stick around for the party right on the Charlotte Knight’s field. Registration starts at $65.
Avril Lavigne (PNC Music Pavilion), Sunday 7 p.m.: The Canadian singer-songwriter made a splash with her pop-punk hit “Sk8er Boi.” Now she’s bringing all of her greatest hits around the country and rocking the PNC Music Pavilion. She’ll be joined by fellow Canadian rock band Simple Plan. Tickets begin at $41.
Charlotte Labor Day Parade (Tryon St. in Uptown), Monday 11 a.m.: Join the fun for a good old-fashioned parade to commemorate Labor Day. With beautiful floats, marching bands, city groups and more, enjoy a fun afternoon Uptown while learning all about workers rights. The parade runs from 9th Street through 3rd Street and is free to watch.
