The Importance of Winter Wellness

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QC Life) - As we step into 2025, the chill of winter brings not only frosty mornings but also an uptick in respiratory viruses. The familiar culprits of cold and flu season—as well as newer concerns—can make staying healthy a top priority for many. If you’re aiming to protect yourself and your loved ones this winter, we’ve got you covered. To help, Dr. Richard Van Meter from Atrium Health shares essential tips for winter wellness.

Bolster Your Immune System

One of the first lines of defense against winter illnesses is maintaining a robust immune system. Dr. Van Meter advises incorporating nutrient-rich foods into your diet, including plenty of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains. “Vitamin C and zinc are particularly helpful in boosting immunity,” he explains.

Staying hydrated is just as crucial in the colder months as it is in summer. “People often forget to drink water when it’s cold, but hydration is key to overall health and helps your immune system function at its best,” Dr. Van Meter emphasizes.

Don’t Skip the Flu Shot—and Stay Updated on Vaccines

Vaccinations remain a cornerstone of winter wellness. “Flu shots significantly reduce the risk of severe illness,” says Dr. Van Meter. He also recommends staying current with other relevant vaccines, such as the COVID-19 booster if applicable.

Practice Good Hygiene

Respiratory viruses spread quickly, especially in crowded indoor settings. Regular handwashing is one of the simplest and most effective ways to reduce your risk. “Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after coughing, sneezing, or touching public surfaces,” Dr. Van Meter advises.

Using hand sanitizer when soap and water aren’t available is a good backup. And remember, avoid touching your face as much as possible—viruses commonly enter the body through the eyes, nose, and mouth.

Dress for the Weather

Keeping warm during winter not only makes you comfortable but also helps reduce stress on your body. Dr. Van Meter recommends layering your clothing to stay warm but breathable. Proper attire reduces your risk of hypothermia or frostbite and keeps your immune system from becoming weakened by extreme cold.

Prioritize Rest and Stress Management

“Sleep and stress management are often overlooked but critical for maintaining health,” says Dr. Van Meter. Aim for 7-8 hours of quality sleep each night and engage in stress-relieving practices like meditation, yoga, or simply spending time with loved ones.

Listen to Your Body

Finally, Dr. Van Meter encourages everyone to tune in to their bodies and act quickly at the first sign of illness. “If you’re feeling under the weather, prioritize rest and hydration. Don’t push through it; instead, give your body the care it needs to recover quickly,” he advises. Staying home when sick can also help prevent spreading illness to others.

Winter wellness doesn’t have to be complicated. With the right habits and a bit of attention, you can enjoy the season while staying as healthy as possible. For more information on staying well this winter, consult your healthcare provider or visit Atrium Health’s website.
