It is endometrial tissue that is outside the uterus, which is an abnormal location, according to Dr. Mark Amalfitano, who specializes in obstetrics and gynecology. Endometriosis can lead to pelvic pain and menstrual pain, but sometimes also chronic pain and pain during intercourse. This condition can lead to infertility.
Treatments for endometriosis include surgery, medications, or hormonal therapy such as birth control pills or other progestin hormone pills.
