What to know when buying oysters to prepare at home

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QC Life) - Today is National Oyster Rockefeller Day, a celebration of a food that some people love and some people hate.

But did you know there are actually hundreds of varieties of oysters? All of those varieties actually come from only five species that can be found along the east, west and gulf coasts of the United States.

Plus, they can be really healthy.

For six medium-sized oysters, you’ll eat about 50 calories, six grams of protein and just one gram of fat.

Raw oysters also have a lot of vitamins and minerals, particularly vitamin B12 which plays a big part in keeping your brain healthy.

But have you ever bought oysters to cook yourself at home? You definitely want to make sure you’re getting good ones, but do you even know what to look for?
