CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QC Life) - National Wine Day is coming up on Saturday and an expert came by to talk about some different types.

Alex Bridge, a partner at CustomShop, went over three wines from some of the biggest wine regions in the world.

France (Rhone) Maz Caz Rouge 2020

  • Grape Varietals: Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah
  • Female winemaker Michele D’Aprix from America is making wine in France. She studied and was mentored by a Bordeaux winemaker.
  • The Rhone wine region is an AOC in Southern France
  • Maz Caz is classic, medium-bodied, earthy and rustic, no frills, just good wine and great value
  • This is great BBQ wine

Italy (Barolo) Alessandro Rivetto ‘Lazzarito’ 2018

  • Grape Varietal: Nebbiolo
  • Elegant and robust, soft silky tannin structure, good showing of Barolo
  • Barolo is a DOCG in the Piedmont region of northern Italy
  • Only two hectares make up this specific bottling, no machinery involved in the vineyard, all manually tended and harvested
  • Food Pairings: Red meat, richer proteins that have some weight and fat to them. Also an aged and funky cheese would pair well.

Spain (Rioja): Conde Valdemar Gran Reserva 2012

  • Grape Varietal: Tempranillo
  • Rich and deep black fruit notes, hints of baking spice and vanilla, long finish, good showing of Rioja.
  • Winery dates back to 1889, still family-owned and operated, fifth generation now overseeing operations.
  • Rioja is a DOC in northern Spain
  • Food Pairings: Lamb is the no brainer. Pork also can be great. Red peppers, pimentos and paprika also pair nicely.
